Retirement at 70? Germany is already talking about the future

Germany is undergoing a profound demographic shift. The population is aging, birth rates are falling, and the number of retirees is growing faster than the number of active workers. This is putting increasing pressure on the public pension system.
Today, the legal retirement age is 67, but in recent months German institutions such as the Bundesbank, the Council of Economic Experts (Sachverständigenrat), and employer associations have publicly noted that, in the long run, a further increase in working years cannot be ruled out to keep the system stable.
ℹ️ What does this mean in practice?
On average, the German state pension (gesetzliche Rente) covers only about 45–48% of the last gross income. These institutions also warn that this level could decrease further if structural measures are not taken.
For many people—especially immigrants with incomplete work histories in Germany—this can mean:
Lower pensions
Greater dependence on the state system
Less flexibility when choosing when to retire
📊 Illustrative example (40-year-old)
State pension only: retirement at 67 with approx. €1,200 per month
State pension + private savings: additional €600–€900 per month, depending on contributions and strategy
👉 Total income: €1,800–€2,100
The difference is not only financial, but also about stability and planning.
💡 How can you improve the situation?
Institutional recommendations point to the need for complementary planning through:
Private pensions
Occupational pension schemes (bAV)
Long-term saving & investing (funds and ETFs)
These tools can reduce dependence on the public system and improve financial predictability in retirement.
